Introduction

Hello.  This is Dr. Victor Chou with the Medical Marijuana Clinic of Louisiana in Baton Rouge.

Today’s article and video addresses a common concern that I hear from patients now that the Flower Medical Marijuana has been released in Louisiana.

Namely “I’ve never used Flower before.”

Well today we’re going to give you the Top 5 Tips if you are New to Flower Medical Marijuana.

As always, please discuss any specific medical decisions with your doctor or pharmacist.

1 – Flower is not a Panacea

One common misconception is that flower medical marijuana is the “best” way to use medical marijuana.

Ultimately flower marijuana is just another way to use medical marijuana and has it’s own pros and cons just like any other form of medical marijuana.

Flower also still follows the same rules concerning route, strain, and dose that other forms of marijuana follow.

2 – Flower has a Learning Curve

Compared with finished products like cartridges or tinctures, which can basically be used right out of the package, flower does have a little bit of a learning curve.

An example I like to use is a finished product is like spaghetti sauce that you can use right out of the jar, and flower is like tomatoes that you have to make into spaghetti sauce.

It’s not necessarily difficult to use flower marijuana, but again be prepared to put in a little effort.

3 – Know the THC Percentage

One major difference between flower and finished products is the labeling.  This is a very important concept to understand for pricing and treatment.

For example, when you purchase a finished product like a tincture or cartridge, the THC amount in milligrams is clearly indicated on the packaging.

Flower is typically sold in grams.  However, the dry weight of the flower is not the amount of THC that is in the flower, which is typically 15% to 25% of the flower weight.

Thus you must adjust accordingly for the best results.

4 – Use the Flower Efficiently

One of the pros with flower is the variety of ways that you can use it.  You can inhale it or make it into edibles.

Unlike with a cartridge or tincture where a dose can be measured fairly precisely, one of the main problems with flower is that it is easy to overestimate how much you need for a single use, and many people tend to use more than necessary.

5 – Start with a Small Amount

Another mistake people make with flower is purchasing too much of an unknown strain.  Unlike a cartridge that may come in a 0.5 gram size, or a tincture bottle that is 1 ounce, you can usually purchase flower as little as 1 gram at a time.

So take advantage of the ability to purchase small amounts of different strains of flower in your quest to find the optimal treatment options for you.
