Introduction

So if you’ve been following the medical marijuana news here in Louisiana, you may have heard that the first product they will be coming out with is a tincture.

Tinctures are one of the most popular ways for people to use medical marijuana, especially in states like Louisiana where smoking or vaping is illegal.

So what is a tincture, and how do you use it?

Well read on for all the information that you will need to know about tinctures.

What is a tincture?

A tincture is a oil or alcohol solvent with marijuana extracted into the liquid.

What are some properties of tinctures?

Tinctures have some of the following properties:

  • Onset of action about 30 minutes after installation
  • Effect lasting about 8 hours after use
  • Easy to use for a wide swath of the population
  • Easy to titrate or adjust dose if needed
  • Bottles usually come in different concentrations

How do I use a tincture?

Tinctures are meant to be instilled between the tongue and the base of the mouth.  Carefully instill no more than 5 drops at a time and allow at least one minute for the drops to be absorbed into the body.

The process can be repeated until the desired amount of drops has been used.  Be careful not to put too many drops at one time as the sublingual mucosa cannot hold more than a few drops.

Can I swallow a tincture?

You can, and it likely won’t hurt you, but you probably will not get as strong as an effect versus taking it under your tongue.

How much does a tincture cost compared with other routes of administration?

A tincture will likely be the most cost effective method of taking medical marijuana in Louisiana, given that other methods like edibles or capsules require an additional processing step which leads to added costs.
