What happens during a typical medical marijuana consultation?

How long should a thorough medical marijuana consultation take?

My answer of 45 to 60 minutes face to face time with the clinician surprises many patients, especially those who are used to a typical doctor’s visit which lasts about 5-10 minutes.

However, as you read further, you’ll have a greater understanding of why a quality consultation takes as long as it does.

Why does a high quality medical marijuana consultation take so long?

A typical medical marijuana consultation is divided into 4 segments:

  1. Taking care of basic tasks, such as providing informed consent, verifying the patient, and obtaining contact information.
  2. Verifying the patient’s qualifying medical diagnosis, which consists of reviewing medical records, interviewing the patient about their symptoms, inquiring about marijuana history, and performing a physical exam on the patient
  3. Providing an overview of the Louisiana medical marijuana program, including a review of statutory regulations, product options, and dispensary locations
  4. Finalizing a patient’s medical marijuana recommendation, which consists of a specific medical marijuana dosing regimen, followup planning, and submission of recommendation to the dispensary.

So you can see with everything that’s involved in providing a medical marijuana recommendation that it’s literally impossible to provide a high quality service in the typical time period that other doctors allocate for a medical marijuana consultation.
